Your first back pain assessment

What to ask, what to bring and how to make the conversation useful for you.

Before you arrange a visit

Ask where and how the consultation will take place, how long it will last and what it will cost. Mention your preferred language and any access needs. Confirm these details before agreeing to an appointment.

Prepare a short account

  • When your symptoms began and whether they have changed.
  • How they affect work, sleep, walking, household tasks or other priorities.
  • Previous care, relevant health conditions and medicines.
  • Any reports you already have and the questions you want answered.

You do not need to send a detailed medical history or upload reports through the initial enquiry form. Bring relevant information to the consultation so it can be discussed in context.

During the assessment

Discuss your symptoms, goals and concerns. Ask why a movement or examination is being suggested and tell the clinician if you are uncomfortable. The assessment should inform an individual plan and identify whether another professional’s opinion is needed.

Leave with a clearer plan

  • What are we working towards?
  • What should I do between appointments?
  • How will progress be reviewed?
  • What changes should prompt earlier advice?
  • What are the next steps and their costs?

For chronic primary low back pain, WHO guidance emphasises person-centred care. Education and exercise can be part of an individual plan; they are not a promise of a particular result.
